Front-Running Candidate: Hon Lien
2:25 PM - Link to this article.
Front-running if she were running for World's Biggest Hypocrite! (In street parlance, that's called a 'dis'.) She is certainly not leading the District 4 race, and she is poised to sink further. Why?
Because this woman is absolutely unbelievable. I won't bother going over all the previous hypocrisy, lies and libel (or maybe I will) - but today's action takes the cake. A quick recap:
Hon sends out a mailer accusing Kansen of having liens against his business. Then, it is revealed that she apparently intentionally misled voters by using erroneous information about liens on another, similarly-named business.
Now, guess what? Turns out Hon actually had liens filed against her business. I have no idea why this surprises me.

That's right. She owes the County over $7,000 (including late fees assessed after the document above was sent out). Seven grand. And she tried to nitpick Kansen over a $50 lien that wasn't even for his business. Note as well, she had already filed to run for school board when this was sent to her. What kind of person runs for office while they owe the County seven large?
The key question: Will Hon Lien do the right thing and let voters know about her mistake? Kansen Chu, according to a press release sent to us, has called on her to do just that.
No wonder she doesn't want to debate Kansen. Who would, after spending thousands of dollars lying? Plus side to all this is that we have a new nickname: Hon "Tax" Lien. Catchy.

It is time all of us in San Jose take the time and fill out this complaint form on Hon Lien and Victor Ajlouny.
Tuesday, we should all attend the City Council meeting and demand Ajlouny be fired, or Reed resign

Victor says that you contact the Mayor through this email address.

Subject: Ms. Hon Lien's campaign
Dear Ms. Lien:
I have been a registered Republican since 1974. In that time, I have proudly supported the Republican Party and many Republican candidates for many types of office. I have been a donor to the Republican Party, and many candidates and causes since 1974.
In the upcoming election for San Jose City Council District 4, I was under the impression that candidates were trying to show San Jose citizens that they have the leadership skills and integrity to represent the people of District 4 honestly and with dedication. I thought the campaign and election was to be an effort to show the voters who is the best candidate to represent District 4. I now know that I was wrong.
Yesterday when I arrived home and went through my mail, I found a 4 page “document” from you that are an obvious desperate, last minute attempt to smear your competitor, Mr. Kansen Chu. Perhaps you have achieved success with other Republican Party Members with this piece of garbage you mailed out. In my case, it backfired! After 23 years of being a loyal Republican Party supporter and donor, you have managed to change the way I look at myself as a Republican. I will now think twice before I ever again endorse any Republican or support a Republican backed cause until I am thoroughly convinced of the integrity of the candidate and the candidate’s positions.
This “document” you mailed out was disgusting. It reeked of a cheap imitation of such “news” rags as the National Enquirer, or other rags that we can find in any checkout line at Safeway. It was pure hype. It was condescending in that it appears to be a sensationalized, “dumbed” down journalistic attempt to appeal to a Jerry Springer Show type of audience. You managed to attack a very successful businessman on some health code violations that date back more than 10 years ago on a business he no longer owns and has not owned in quite a while. You sensationalized it with “graphic” evidentiary pictures that you warn people not to look at. That’s like telling people not to slow down on the freeway to look at a bad accident! And you know it! You point out in large print, a couple of instances where Mr. Chu was late in paying some of his tax debts, though you did manage to indicate that all of these things have been cleaned up, but in very small print. You pretty much drew a line in the sand and invited Mr. Chu to take his campaign down to your gutter level. That might be okay provided that your businesses have NEVER had any health or safety code violations. Or that you have never filed or paid any taxes late. Or that you have never filed for bankruptcy protection and left your creditors out in the cold. Or you are not guilty of any other issue that could come back to haunt you.
I then received another flyer from you today that on one side, you tell me that “Hon Thi Lien Respects the Law.” You have a statement that states “her experience and commitment to keeping our schools and neighborhoods safe has earned her the support of San Jose’s Law Enforcement Associations.” So I am curious to know what you have done to make the schools and neighborhoods in District 4 area safer. What have you done to earn the endorsement of our law enforcement associations? Quite frankly, after the piece you mailed out yesterday, I will be very disappointed if Officer Lopez and the San Jose Police Officers’ Association continue to endorse your candidacy!
You state that “Hon Lien respects the law and law enforcement professionals respect Hon Lien”. As a citizen and taxpayer in San Jose, I thank you for respecting the law, but you are expected to respect the law, so that is a pointless argument on your behalf. And I am still wondering why Hon Lien rates particular respect from San Jose’s law enforcement associations?
On the other side of the flyer, you indicate that you are the right choice for safe schools and neighborhoods. You say all the right things, but it made me think about something. I have been heavily involved in my children’s’ schools, Vinci Park Elementary and Piedmont Middle School, and our school district, Berryessa Union School District, for 6+ years. I have been involved in girls’ softball at North Valley Little League and Berryessa Little League. I have served in the Vinci Park School PTA for 6+ years as Treasurer and President. I have worked on campuses and in the classrooms as a volunteer. I have volunteered my time to clean up garbage and trash on the school campuses and to plant trees and flowers. I have chaperoned school events and many field trips. I do a lot of volunteer work in my community and throughout San Jose on behalf of the American Heart Association. I realized that in all of the years I have been involved in so many things in this area, I have NEVER seen YOU volunteer at any of these things. Maybe you were there somewhere and I just never noticed you or heard you speak out. Ironically, the person you are running against, Mr. Chu, I have seen at just about every function I have ever been involved in over those 6 years, even though he was not even running for any office during that time. You make a last minute decision to become a City Councilwoman and all of a sudden you are a community leader? Ms. Lien, you are not worthy to be in the same room as Mr. Chu!
You have a very impressive list of endorsements. Considering your lack of public service experience compared to Mr. Chu’s public service experience, I am not sure how you earned those endorsements, so I must assume your endorsements do not carry any real value to them. I find some of the quoted endorsements very interesting. For example, Mayor Reed states, “Hon Lien is an independent thinker with the business background as well as the intelligence, character and experience to make the hard choices over the next few years as San Jose faces a very serious structural deficit problem. She will make the right decisions based on what is best for the District and the City as a whole, and she will not buckle to special interests or political agendas. That is why I have endorsed Hon and am asking you to join me in voting for Hon." Your biography tells me that you are a very intelligent person and I have to respect what you have achieved thus far according to your biography. However, the Mayor states that you will not buckle to special interests or political agendas. I think that is disingenuous! I think the flyer you put out yesterday reeks of a political agenda, one that we saw in the prior election for San Jose’s major city offices. It makes me wonder who is advising you on your campaign and who that person advised in prior campaigns.
You state your positions on the issues, some of which are:
A government that is honest, open and accessible to all people;
Housing our young people can afford;
Creating jobs thus generating revenues for better public safety including fully funding truancy abatement and crossing guard programs, funding after school programs, street repairs.
a. I am suspicious about your commitment to honest government. Care to show me why I shouldn’t be after you decided to take the City Council District 4 campaign down to a new low?
b. Housing our young people can afford? What can a City Councilmember do to make housing for my kids more affordable? It would be nice if housing for my daughters would be more affordable in the future, but to the best of my knowledge, housing costs are determined by supply and demand. It is a real nice sound bite, because we all want to buy our homes as cheaply as possible, but we also want our homes to be worth as much as possible. That’s two major conflicts right there!
c. Do you have what it takes to go to the CEO’s of the companies in North San Jose and convince them that they must hire more local talent, pay them what they need in order to afford to live here, provide them with the health benefits necessary to survive, to quit firing older workers, and to quit outsourcing customer service and manufacturing jobs overseas?
d. The City of San Jose has the finest and most professional police department in the United States. Our police and fire departments are in desperate need of more money for more officers, more equipment, etc. We sorely need many drastic improvements in public safety including hiring far more police and firefighters to not only bring their numbers back up to par, but to prepare for a glut of retirements as well. Where will that money come from? Right now, the City of San Jose is facing the same kind of problems that Ford and General Motors are having trouble dealing with: retirement costs that continue to grow beyond what the City can afford if it also intends to keep San Jose a top tier city.
e. Crossing guard programs? Our PTA tried numerous times over the years to get professional crossing guards to replace the 4th & 5th grade students that Vinci Park School is forced to use. We involved Mayor Reed when he was our City Councilman and had several meetings with the San Jose Police Department, who must do a study and make the recommendations for crossing guards, all to no avail. We tried to get speed bumps, increased police patrols, increased parking & traffic enforcement, etc., again all to no avail. It was made very clear to us that the money was not there to help us, but I have always believed all of that would change once a student crossing guard is hurt or killed.
f. Street repairs? Where are you going to get the millions upon millions of dollars it will take to make repairs to our infrastructure after our local governments has let it fall in to a state of disrepair due to a lack of money?
g. Where are YOU going to get money to provide after school programs for our children? We are not providing adequate funding for programs for our children while they are at school during school hours, so what can you do differently after school? I spent 6+ years begging for money to help make my children’s schools better places to learn and it was always an annual and continual uphill battle to earn a lousy $40,000 for an entire year for a school that has 765 kids on average! Some of our schools receive less money per student than other schools throughout the State on average, as much as $1,000+ less. We have young students at Vinci Park School right now who have the potential, the talents, and the intelligence to be the first Vietnamese American woman President of the United States, for example, or maybe the doctor who finds a cure for some major disease, but we do not have the dollars to provide the same level of education a student will find in areas like Cupertino. It is a real shame that our schools have such wonderful young people who are not receiving equal benefits at school.
In closing I would like to say that if you believe that you are leadership material as well as a person of integrity and honor, then you should do the right thing and publicly apologize to Mr. Chu for your smear campaign, your lack of integrity, and your questionable ethics.
Regards,
Dwight T. Mensinger
