How To Elect A Friendly Council Vote

While we're on the topic of transparently unethical and hypocritical behavior, let's dip into the City Clerk's website for some campaign contribution information.

In Barry Witt's recent look at Chuck's big sell-out, he mentions several Sharks owners who gave money to get Mayor Tweed elected.

And guess what? Hon Lien received $2,000 from some of those same individuals and employees of their companies*. And according to the clerk's website, Kansen Chu didn't receive a dime.

So what we have here is: a completely inexperienced candidate for Council who moved into District 4 in 2006, supported by the Mayor blatantly because she will do whatever he says, with a campaign consultant who is also a city employee in some opaque manner, and who has received exclusive contributions from interests that have millions of dollars on the table over the short term and long term.

The date of the first vote on the additional Sharks subsidy is supposed to by May 8th. Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mayor gets that pushed back until after Election Day. I have a feeling that won't really make a difference.

* For those keeping track at home, it's $250 from Rudy Staedler, $250 from Boots del Biaggio, and $1500 from employees of Rudy Staedler's company. How generous of them!

As a point of interest, don't forget that 14 years ago, most of the hockey players donated $250 each to Margie Fernandez' campaign, apparently at the request of Susan Hammer.

Use of the hocky enterprise for political favors is nothing new, but remains contemptible and certainly violates Reed's commitment to honesty, transparency, and openness.

Those of us who live in North San Jose, and especially the dozens of us who have been brushed by the wings of death by smear, Victor, are confident that Reed will overreach himself more and more. After all, it only took 100 days for the mask of openness to slip off in the Wolfe/SJSU/stadium imbroglio.

And, lest we forget, who was advising the Fernandez campaign? Chuck Reed.

Too bad he did so badly, forcing her out of the race.
